Why being "different" is not a bad thing

Orange marmalade

Do you like orange marmalade? You may think it strange or “different”  but I had never tasted it until quite recently. I am pretty sure that you will not have come across many adults who have not tried marmalade at least once – it is, after all, a common staple on many breakfast tables here in the United Kingdom.

I had never even heard of it until I came to England a few years ago. Shortly after I arrived, the first person I met took it upon themselves to tell me all about the many new or let’s say “different“ things I would come across in the UK.

I recall during one of our chats, there was a sharp comment about orange marmalade – “Orange marmalade is so horrible, you do not want even to taste it!“  I took my friend at their word and believed for many years that orange marmalade was something really terrible.

Purely because my friend told me her negative opinion about marmalade, I didn’t even want to look at it. I rejected it when it was offered to me, and I avoided it for years – I actually got a little silly about it, when I saw it in a shop, I would pretend it just didn’t exist or that it would just disappear soon!

I couldn’t believe what I was missing

A few days ago I was visiting another friend, and there it was, orange marmalade sitting on the table –  acting all innocent, waiting for me to have to taste it!

The funny thing is, I know my intense dislike is quite irrational and I was too embarrassed to explain it to my friend. Not wanting to look silly I decided to take the plunge and have a taste.

Guess what? I can’t believe I have missed out on this delicious product – I loved it! Honestly, orange marmalade is now my favorite. It just goes to show, liking different things or doing things a different way is not a bad thing. Not at all.

Different opinion different result

You may think I was rather silly to be convinced by my friend’s opinion without trying it for myself. I completely agree, I have missed out on the joy of marmalade on toast all this time!

This is just a light-hearted example I am using to illustrate my point. Do you realize how many people follow others “just because everyone else is“ without really knowing or questioning why?

Do you know how many people follow each other’s path without discovering their own one and who they truly are?

Being “different“ pablo-6

To me being “different” means being true to yourself. While it has a different meaning for each of us, it also means stepping into your inner power and following your unique path.

  • To become different means to follow your heart.
  • To become different means to become who you are meant to be – the real you.
  • To become different means doing more of things that make you happy.

Being different means being honest with yourself

Finding your unique path may be a challenge. But along your journey you are going to find out that it is about doing what you love and doing it on your own terms. Whatever it means to you.

Is it about having quality time for those who you love most? Or is it about having financial, personal and travel freedom? Maybe it is being able to discover different options and meet different people.

It may be a different life, but it will be the life that you want – because different is not always a bad thing.

It all starts with you! Whatever different means to you, stay true to yourself.
